Alex McCormack pushed the pace at this year’s Atlas Mountain Race from the start, leading the pointy end of the race from Marrakesh to the coast in Essaouira. He rode neck-and-neck with Benedek Borsos from Hungary, reaching the third checkpoint at kilometer 877 within minutes of each other, and managed to pull ahead around kilometer 1,170. He held onto the lead right to the finish. Alex’s final finish time was just 3 days and 20 hours, taking first place overall at the 2025 Atlas Mountain Race.

Of course, this isn’t Alex’s first rodeo. At just 27 years old, Alex took first place at the 2024 Highland Trail Race in Scotland, shaving over two hours off the previous record. He scratched from that race in 2023 and clearly wasn’t done with the route. The same year, Alex finished in first place and Further Elements Scotland, completing the 700-kilometer route in a little over 38 hours.
Alex is planning to tackle all three of the Mountain Races this year, so you can look forward to following him again in May at the Hellenic Mountain Race and then in August at the Silk Road Mountain Race. Impressive ride, Alex! Benedek Borsos finished in second place, roughly an hour and a half after Alex, and Drikus Coetzee and Kevin Benkenstein are fighting it out for third.
