Andrew Strempke of Dispersed Bikepacking recently set off on the Grand Loop, finishing third overall and first in the singlespeed category. Well versed in the twists and turns of the course, Andrew matched his pace from the year prior—a course record for the category. In this video, Andrew breaks down the rig that has served him so well, as well as the bags he and his partner, Katie, make in La Sal, Utah.

Reaching out to Andrew for comment on his record-setting bike, he said, “I’m a big fan of my Chumba Sendero Ti for trail riding and bikepacking. Chumba is a small company making high quality bikes in the US. My frame was made in Austin, Texas, where I picked it up and shook Mark the welder’s hand. It’s got a solid single-speed chain tensioning system, mud clearance for 2.6″ tires, and great geo for big rides on rough terrain. I recently switched to a Shimano crank, and I’m loving the combination of a T47 bottom bracket and a 24mm spindle. The BB bearings are huge! My bike has never been so quiet for so long. I’ve set this up with backcountry singletrack bikepacking in mind, so reliability is my first priority followed by weight.

Why single-speed? Reliability, cost, weight, forced recovery (hike-a-bike and coasting), and one less thing to think about. Plus, I just like it. When a route is rugged, a single-speed shines, and it isn’t much slower than a geared bike. All my bags are Dispersed Bikepacking bags, handmade by Katie and me in our off-grid workshop.”
