It’s been more than three years since Austere Manufacturing launched its flagship product, a CNC-machined cam buckle made from solid billet aluminum. Since then, they’ve positioned themselves as hardware and buckle experts with the addition of the Pin Ladder Lock, larger 1″ buckles, and their delightfully over-engineered Lock Belt. It appears they have no plans to slow down and have added two new products to their lineup of US-made hardware. Find details on both below.
Austere Retro Cam Buckle
The new Retro Cam Buckle combines the cam-locking buckle found on Austere’s original buckle with the pin found on the Pin Ladder Lock buckle. The pin comes uninstalled, allowing the buckle to be retrofitted to an existing bag without sewing. All it takes is a pair of side cutters and a way to press a pin like the Knipex Pliers Wrench, a bench vise, or a press.
The Retro Cam Buckle looks like a great upgrade for many different seatpacks with compression straps that loop under the saddle rails. It’s sized for 3/4″ webbing, weighs 10.8 grams (0.4 ounces), and is machined from billet aluminum. Like the Pin Ladder Lock, customers can choose between a stainless steel or titanium pin, and the buckles are currently available in three color combos: ranger green/yellow, ranger green/orange, and ranger green/coyote. Austere Girth Hitch Cam Strap
The Austere Girtch Hitch Cam Strap is simply their original Cam Locking Buckle with sewn webbing loops at each end, allowing it to be girth hitched onto handlebars, cargo bike platforms, and racks. Austere’s Founder, Uriel Eisen, has been using two of them between his handlebar and fork crown for a simple but incredibly robust handlebar harness setup with great success.
The Austere Girth Hitch Camp Strap includes a cam lock buckle with an 8″ section of 3/4″ wide webbing, a second 48″ section of webbing, and loops are sewn at both ends. They are available in the same color options as the Retro Cam Buckle, with your choice of webbing color (Ranger Green or Coyote) and either a titanium or stainless steel pin.
