Mexico is a country that all bike travelers seem to completely fall in love with, and with the best food in the country, beautiful coastlines, ancient Zapotec ruins and vast mountain ranges, the state of Oaxaca might be the best it has to offer. So, after more than a year since I set off from the Arctic Circle of Alaska I decided, for the first time, to stop heading south and take some time to explore this wonderful state.
The journey was a tale of two halves. The first took me down to the coast on Cass Gilbert’s Oaxaca Escondida route, crossing the beautiful Sierra Sur before a wild and stunning descent took me down to the coast, where I was able to wild camp on the Pacific Ocean. The second was truly special, though: a gruelling eight-hour hike-a-bike took me to the end of the line of a road connecting small Indigenous communities, high up in the mountains, that I believe may have never been visited by bike before. Here, rough weather drove me to seek the hospitality of kind locals and led me to experiences I’ll never forget.
The rest of the journey back to the city involved endlessly stunning dirt riding, and one final climb to the magical site of Hierve el Agua before a fast ride through the Oaxaca valley returned me to the city that had begun to feel like home. You can watch my 40-minute video from the experience above, and be sure to catch up on some past videos linked below.
