For our latest Collective Reward, we teamed up with Fizik to give two site supporters a pair of Ergolace Flat 2 shoes, which were recently redesigned from the ground up. Find the details here…

Our 250th Collective Reward comes from folks at Fizik, who have been designing and manufacturing some of the most sought-after cycling equipment and accessories for over 30 years. Despite producing saddles and helmets, it’s their shoes that have appeared the most often on this website, earning the respect and trust of bikepackers worldwide.

In May, Fizik revamped the popular Ergolace lineup with four fresh versions in flat and clipless styles, featuring both a standard and waterproof Gore-Tex construction. The new Fizik Ergolace 2 lineup is the brand’s most comfort-focused silhouette, making it perfect for on- and off-bike adventures. A couple of Bikepacking Collective members will take home a pair of Ergolace Flat 2 shoes in their choice of size for our latest giveaway, a $150 value for each winner.

Much like the original Ergolace, both versions of the new shoe emphasize time off the pedals through their sole design. The Ergolace 2 has specific outsoles for the clipped and flat versions, with the flat version using the Vibram XS Ride and the clipped Ergolace using the Vibram Megagrip. Fizik says these outsoles are optimized for walking and that the shoe also features lower-profile lugs for better pedal interface. At the heel and toe, deeper, more aggressive tread helps provide traction on loose ground. The clipless Ergolace 2 uses a revised nylon shank that, according to the brand, improves pedaling efficiency while maintaining the flexibility needed for walking.

Having logged thousands of miles in the previous version, I spent several months testing the Ergolace Flat 2 shoes to see how they stack up against the originals. What stood out was the roomier fit and wide toe box, the lightweight yet durable construction, and the new Vibram sole, which was grippier both on and off the bike. I ended my review with a bold statement: “The Fizik Ergolace 2 Flats are my new favorite flat bikepacking shoes,” and I’ve already nominated them for a Gear of the Year award.
