Phil Vandelay refers to himself as a “pseudo-engineer” who makes bikes, tools, and videos. His YouTube channel is a treasure trove of fascinating and useful videos, from building his own seatpost removal tool to designing a full-suspension cargo bike; it’s no surprise he has 250,000 subscribers. One of his latest creations is a cargo bike with a nifty folding cargo platform that tucks in toward the center of the bike when not in use. Phil’s new video documents the cargo bike build, known as Vandelay CCX, with details on the old donor frame, 3D-scanning a rear triangle, thoughts on the steering system, and more. Like most of Phil’s projects, he’s offering a downloadable guide for anyone interested in building their own cargo bike. The 33-page PDF contains plans, measurements, and detailed background information to help you build the foldable cargo bike shown in the YouTube video series. The build involves metalworking and welding. Fabrication experience and a basic understanding of bicycles are required to complete this project; it isn’t beginner-friendly.
