We stumbled on Phil Vandelay’s YouTube channel a while back, and his latest video follows the process behind building an extra-sturdy front rack using a cheap pipe-bending tool. It’s quite satisfying to watch. See it and find a couple of other interesting picks from the channel here…
There’s something uniquely satisfying about well-crafted videos from woodworkers, builders, machinists, and other skilled makers. The close-up shots of tools in action, paired with the ambient sounds of the workshop, have a captivating effect, especially as you wait to see the final creation come to life. I stumbled upon Phil Vandelay’s videos a while back and couldn’t be happier I did. Based in Hamburg, Germany, Phil describes himself as a “Pseudo Engineer making Bikes, Tools, Videos, and more.” His latest creation popped up in my feed yesterday, and it was too good to ignore. Check it out below, along with a few other bike-related videos from his channel.

How to Build a DIY Cargo Bike
Now four years old, Phil made this video about his first cargo bike build after fielding countless questions on Reddit. Due to the growing interest in this type of project, he created a proper tutorial to guide others interested in building their own cargo bike. The video provides a comprehensive overview, but there’s also a full set of plans available covering all the necessary numbers and theoretical aspects. Find that here.
Electric Cargo Bike Build
In Part two of Phil’s most involved bike build yet, he completes his electric cargo bike, which includes the creation of all the components for the cable steering and kickstand, solving the internal wiring, and performing the final assembly and testing. There’s also one more episode to come, Phil mentioned, covering additional details of the build.
