The new Durston X-Dome Pro 1+ is essentially the same as the regular X-Dome 1+ tent Neil reviewed, but with all the materials changed to premium, superlight Dyneema fabrics, and the pole set upgraded to next-generation “pure carbon” poles from Easton that now use carbon for the inserts (joints) to be even stronger, more reliable, and lighter. Like the regular version, the X-Dome Pro 1+ is fully freestanding, has a single zippered doorway and vestibule, and has a spacious floorplan that’s nearly as large as some small two-person tents.
The X-Dome Pro 1+ uses a reliable double-Y-shaped pole structure with a horizontal peak strut for increased interior space. The interior height is 42″, which Durston says is 3-6″ taller than comparable tents. The tent is fully freestanding, requiring no mandatory stakes, and the vestibule can be secured with a trekking pole when hiking.
The full coverage fly extends low to the ground to block rain splatter and drafts, and the unique floor shape allows taller occupants to sleep diagonally, offering up to 90″ (7.5′) of floor length. The width tapers from 50″ (130cm) to 29″ (75cm), providing enough room for wide sleeping pads or even two narrow pads in a pinch. There are magnetic door toggles on the fly and interior doors, the T-shaped zipper on the interior allows you to fully open the sides, and the main vestibule area is large and beside the door instead of blocking it.
Because of its external pole structure, the tent naturally pitches fly-first, keeping the inside dry in foul weather. The Durston X-Dome Pro 1+ weighs just 1.7 pounds (780 grams), making it one of the lightest double-wall freestanding tents in the world, and lighter than the 813-gram Hyperlite CrossPeak 1, released this spring. The packed size is 19″ x 4.5″ (48 x 12cm).
