After bikepacking the Rockstar Gravel route last year, Kerry Werner returned to challenge the fastest known time on the 270-mile course between Harrisonburg and Roanoke, Virginia. Fastest Known Rockstar documents this massive effort, and you can watch it here…

The Rockstar Challenge is a 270-mile race from Rocktown (Harrisonburg) to the Star City (Roanoke) in Virginia. Each year, there are three route options to choose from: Trail, Gravel, and Paved. Kerry Werner set out on an individual time trial on the gravel route this spring after getting a taste bikepacking the route last year.

With little ultra-endurance experience to draw from, Kerry came up with a lofty goal to beat the current fastest known time, which at the time was 18 hours and 43 minutes. He pushed through the Virginia heat and his own doubt to set a new time of 18 hours and 30 minutes. Watch the video documenting his ride below:

“Am I going to allow myself to dig deep enough, and go into these really dark places and crawl out of them fast enough to be able to set a new time?”
