Salsa Cycles just announced the Journeyer, their all-new workhorse all-road bicycle that replaces the versatile Journeyman (find our review from 2019 in the related posts grid below) in Salsa’s lineup, now with improved performance and functionality. With ample tire clearance and loads of mounts at an affordable price point, Salsa affirms the Journeyer as a rock-solid adventure machine that should appeal to anyone seeking a do-it-all bike for gravel riding and bikepacking. The new name is part of Salsa’s ongoing effort to make their product naming more inclusive, and the Journeyer is also a technical evolution over its predecessor.
More than just a rename, Salsa redesigned the frame and added new carbon-fiber and aluminum fork options to update the Journeyer with thru-axles on the higher-end builds. The aluminum frame sticks with the 68mm threaded bottom bracket and flat-mount brake standards.
Designed for maximum cargo capacity, the Journeyer features all the mounts for any bikepacking or light touring configuration you might imagine. The fork is loaded with three-pack, low-rider, and fender mounts, and the frame has triple mounts in the main triangle, top tube mounts, and rear rack and fender mounts. Tire clearance is excellent for a bike in this category, with riders able to fit up to 700c x 56mm or 650b x 58mm rubber depending on the fork. The Journeyer frame features internal dropper post routing, though none of the models come with a dropper post.
Diving into the build specs, the Journeyer is offered in a dizzying array of 18 different models, plus the bare frameset. Split into drop-bar and flat bar models, and offered in both 700c and 650b wheel sizes, there’s a Journeyer model for everyone. On the drop-bar side, you’ll find Shimano GRX 810/610, Sora, Claris, SRAM Apex 1, and microSHIFT Advent groupsets. The flat bar Journeyer is specced with Shimano Deore, Altus, or microSHIFT Acolyte.
Taking a peek at the updated geometry, the new frameset comes with a tweaked bottom bracket drop, which sits 2mm higher at 70mm. The headtube was slackened to a more off-road-friendly 69.5°. The drop-bar models have reduced stack and increased reach, while the flat-bar models are slightly lower and shorter.
