Lazer’s KinetiCore tech is an interesting new integrated rotational impact protection system they say is lightweight, safer than standard helmets, and reduces the amount of plastic used in helmet construction. Learn more here…

Rotational impact protection tech in cycling helmets is nothing new, and we’ve seen several manufacturers put a spin on this concept over the years, including Smith’s Koroyd, Bontrager’s WaveCel, and the most widely recognized, MIPS. The idea is that impacts aren’t usually direct, and to protect the user’s head against angled, or rotational, impacts, the helmet must be able to shift independently from the rider’s head.

Most of these systems rely on the addition of technology added into a standard helmet, while Laser’s KinetiCore is actually built directly into the EPS foam. Blocks and channels designed to absorb or redirect the forces of both linear and rotational impacts are molded into the helmet. Lazer describes the tech as being similar to the crumple zones built into cars, preventing harmful impact forces from reaching your head. KinetiCore has received a five-star rating from Virginia Tech, and it reduces weight over other rotational safety tech, increases ventilation due to the lack of internal liner, and uses up to 24% less plastic compared to previous comparable models.

For 2022, Lazer is offering six helmet models with their new KinetiCore tech. On the road side are the Vento KinetiCore and Strada KinetiCore, retailing for $299.99 and $109.99, respectively. The Jackal KinetiCore, pictured above, is their only mountain bike helmet, retailing for $219.99. The CityZen KinetiCore is their urban/street option at $59.99, and they are offering two kids’ helmets that both retail for $49.99. At first glance, Lazer’s new tech looks pretty appealing from a safety and affordability standpoint, and we’re excited to check it out for ourselves soon.
