When we heard Meaghan Hackinen was planning to take on all three of the Mountain Races this year, starting with the Atlas Mountain Race, we knew she would be a fun rider to watch. Meaghan had a busy, podium-packed 2024 race season, including being the first woman to finish the Ozark Gravel Doom in Arkansas, the first woman to finish the Tour Divide (and the fastest woman to complete it as part of the grand depart ever!), and the first overall to finish the Arkansas High Country Race. The 40-year-old was also signed onto Salsa Cycles’ ambassador program for 2025, which is shaping up to be one heck of a race season.
Meaghan rolled into the coastal city of Essaouira this evening (local time), becoming the second woman to finish the 2025 Atlas Mountain Race. Just 30 women are participating in this year’s event, which is a surprisingly small group considering there are nearly 300 riders. Meaghan found a spot at the pointy end of the race early on, moving into second place for the women after Mascha Wahlig scratched at the first checkpoint from persistent blurry vision. According to the race organizers, she mentioned having trouble with her suspension fork, which she locked out completely.
Mel Webb and the media crew intercepted Meaghan, who had about 100 kilometers left. Mel reported that she looked pretty cooked and sunburnt and shared that she struggled to maintain Marei’s pace and lack of sleep. Meaghan had been sleeping about three hours per night, and even that wasn’t enough to keep up. Meaghan shared that she’s been blown away by the riding in Morocco and how ferocious the competition has been. Meaghan’s official finish time is 5 days, 1 hour, and 30 minutes.
Nice work, Meaghan! We look forward to following along at the Hellenic Mountain Race in May.
