Mokka To Go is an interesting new addition to portable coffee brewing methods. Developed by cyclist Sven Jan Hiltbrand, the Mokka To Go mimics the function of a traditional moka pot, a device that creates 1-2 bars of pressure through its filtered designed, making an “espresso-like” beverage. Anyone who has a moka pot, however, knows they can be pretty heavy and a little unwieldy, so, Sven developed the Mokka To Go. The brewer fits in any standard bottle cage and can brew hot or cold coffees with the addition of a small stove.

Currently, the Mokka To Go is just a Kickstarter campaign, so products aren’t available yet. However, they’ve blown their $6,000 goal out of the water, raising nearly $50,000 and showing there is an appetite for a more portable and compact moka pot. While I can appreciate the more modern design, I’d be curious to see how much of an improvement the Mokka To Go provides over a standard Moka pot. I think the main advantage here is that it’s more cylindrical and fits in a bottle cage, improving the packability of the odd, less-compact angles of a traditional moka pot.
That said, there are much more convenient methods of brewing coffee outside, and the distinct taste of a moka-like brew isn’t something I’ve ever really craved. Tastes, of course, are individual, and moka pots aren’t that popular here in the United States, so perhaps this is a godsend for coffee lovers outside my immediate purview. What do you think?
