The new LifeStraw Sip is a super portable and lightweight take on the classic LifeStraw water filter, and according to LifeStraw, it’s the world’s first reusable stainless steel water filter straw capable of removing microplastics, bacteria, and parasites from drinking water.
The LifeStraw Sip is just 10″ long, not much thicker than a pen, and weighs 1.8 ounces (51 grams). While it’s marketed more as an urban travel filter than for backcountry use, we can’t help but think it would make a great addition to any bikepacking kit, especially for emergencies when traveling through places where drinking water is suspect.
The LifeStraw Sip uses a novel high-flow microfilter membrane for easy sipping, and packs it inside a stainless steel straw. LifeStraw promises reliable filtration for up to 1,000 liters and includes a leak-proof carrying case. The 0.2 micron filter protects against 99.999999% of bacteria, 99.9999% of parasites, 99.999% of microplastics, silt, sand, and cloudiness. However, unlike a water purifier, the Sip doesn’t protect against water-borne viruses or microbes. You can learn more about the differences between filters and purifiers, and much more in our guide to the topic. The LifeStraw Sip includes a replaceable silicone mouthpiece, meets US EPA/NSF P231 drinking water standards, and is BPA-free.
The LifeStraw Sip is available now from REI and will be available to purchase via LifeStraw.com starting May 20th for $34.95 or as a three-pack for $89.95.
