Part of Neuhaus Metalworks’ new Taiwan-made Core Collection, the Neuhaus Hummingbird is a steel hardtail designed around a 120mm fork that has clearance for 29 x 2.6″ tires and is available in five sizes and three colors. Learn all about the Neuhaus Hummingbird here…

We’ve reported on California-based Neuhaus Metalworks a number of times here on the site, including as part of our 2023 MADE bike show coverage and at Sea Otter last year. To refresh everyone’s memory, Neuhaus Metalworks is a two-person operation run mainly by Nick Neuhaus and designer, engineer, and 3D-printing master Daniel Yang.

Until today, all of their bikes were handmade in the USA, with all the perks of custom-made bikes. The new Neuhaus Hummingbird marks the beginning of the Neuhaus Core Collection, Taiwan-made versions that combine some of their best designs at a fraction of the cost of the US-made models. The Hummingbird is based around quad-butted, heat-treated, Chromoly steel tubing, and size-specific tubes to ensure an equal ride quality across the entire size range. All sizes are designed around a 120mm travel fork, 29″ wheels with clearance for 2.1 to 2.6″ rubber, boost hub spacing, a threaded BSA 73mm bottom bracket, tapered headtube, and 31.6mm seatpost diameter.

Neuhaus carried through several thoughtful features from their custom frames, including two standard bottle mounts on every size, easy-to-maintain external cable routing with reusable metal clips, sliding dropouts, and their signature bottle bracket allowing for two bottles and full dropper insertion.

According to Neuhaus, the Hummingbird’s geometry is balanced. “Instead of focusing solely on headtube angles, we seek a balance between rider position, weight distribution, and handling characteristics.” They use un-sagged geo numbers, so the 66° head tube angle is actually relatively steep compared to most modern hardtails. They see the geo numbers as just one part of a the entire system that dictates ride quality, and it’s important to look at everything (standing geo, climbing geo, wheelbase, tube selection, stem length, bar width, travel, and tire selection) as a whole. At first glance, the Hummingbird looks like it will offer snappy handling and agility on a variety of terrain.

While you won’t find extra bosses for racks or even top tube mounts, there’s an additional set of mounts under the downtube, and Neuhaus purposefully omitted rear rack mounts because the small and medium sizes use slim 1/2″ seat stays for compliance. To avoid loading the skinny stays, they suggest using a threaded cargo axle like those from Old Man Mountain.
