Although I don’t often mention it here on the site, I distinctly remember selling numerous Roscoes during my brief stint working at a Trek store years ago. The Roscoe has always had a lot going for it, like a lightweight aluminum frame, relatively progressive trail geometry, and a variety of builds and price points that made it a great first mountain bike. The latest version sees a whole host of updates that make it look even more appealing.
The redesigned Trek Roscoe Gen 4 shares many similarities with the previous generation, including an aluminum frame and 29″ wheels on all sizes aside from the smallest, but it’s otherwise quite a unique animal. It now uses Trek’s new Alpha NEXT aluminum tubes, which are reportedly more environmentally friendly and reduce excess weight. It comes with a 150mm fork instead of 140mm, has a lower standover for longer dropper posts, and has clearance for 29 x 2.6″ tires.

The geometry hasn’t changed significantly, aside from a steeper seat tube angle, slightly increased reach, and a slight increase in stack. It features the same 65° head tube angle, 430mm chainstays, and 61mm bottom bracket drop, and is now available in five sizes (S-XL), down from six. It’s really interesting to see a bolt-on frame bag included with builds, complete with zippers on both sides, a water-resistant recycled ripstop polyester construction, and a Hypalon daisy chain around the perimeter, allowing it to be used on other bikes.
The new Roscoe is available in two complete builds. The Roscoe 8 Gen 4 comes with a Fox Rhythm 36 150mm fork, a Shimano Deore 12-speed drivetrain, Deore-level hydraulic brakes, and Bontrager Brevard Pro XR 29 x 2.5 tires. It retails for $2,399. The Roscoe 7 Gen 4 comes with a RockShox Recon Silver RL 150mm fork, a Shimano CUES 10-speed drivetrain, more affordable brakes, and the same tires as the Roscoe 8. It’s priced at $1,499. The Roscoe 8 comes in two color options, Dark Star or Lava, and the Roscoe 7 comes in Matte Olive Grey or Buff Beige.
