As we shared in October, Western North Carolina was hit hard by Hurricane Helene, receiving a historic amount of rainfall and causing cataclysmic flooding and landslides and washing out entire communities. Asheville’s Rockgeist was hit hard, losing several machines and a lot of materials. They now have to move the whole operation to a new space.

To help get back to where they left off, Rockgeist’s very own Emmy has designed a Hurricane Helene Relief Shirt to help with their fundraising efforts. The shirts are individually screen-printed by Emmy and are inspired by a print of Katsushika Hokusai’s “Under the Wave off Kanagawa” that was in the Rockgeist workshop since day one. Emmy took inspiration from Hokusai’s print and created “Helene or Highwater.” Rockgeist founder Greg Hardy explains, “I found the print in a dumpster outside my Boston apartment when moving to North Carolina. I always thought it depicted what it’s like to run a small business; fighting against the current of larger forces with determination and resolve.”

Rockgeist Shop Update

Words by Greg Hardy

As a general shop update, we are still operating in our temporary space with limited ability to sew. It’s hard to know exactly when, but we might have the ability to move into our new space close to March. At that time, we will then begin the process of rebuilding our permanent shop and start manufacturing our full line of sewn and welded bags.

  • Rockgeist Bikepacking Bags

Until that time, we’re making the most of our temporary space by sewing custom framebag orders from before the flood. We are almost finished with those and plan to open ordering for new custom orders in early February. We’re also beginning to make certain universal gear such as Armadillo protectors, and Microwave Panniers are not too far out from being available again. It’s encouraging to see some progress over the last few months, and we can’t wait for spring to arrive. Thank you all for your support and encouragement this winter, its made a tremendous difference.
