The new San Util Whirlpool MKII hip pack keeps all the original elements but is slightly larger, adds new zippered hip-wing pockets, and, for the first time for San Util, is made in Vietnam. Take a closer look here…

Josh Hicks reviewed the original Whirlpool hip pack from San Util Design a few years ago and appreciated its generous water capacity, highly stuffable design, and the various customizations San Util offered. It featured a roll-top closure, two bottle holsters on either side, external daisy chains, and an optional 1.5L bladder. This week, San Util Design released the second iteration of the Whirlpool hip pack, building on an already impressive bag.

The core design of the San Util Whirlpool MKII hip pack remains the same. It still accommodates a 1.5L lumbar bladder (sold separately), works with San Util’s bottle holsters for extra water capacity, includes an external daisy chain, and has compression straps on the bottom for layers or knee pads. The Whirlpool MKII has the same expandable roll-top closure, a Fidlock magnetic buckle, and an orange interior liner fabric.

The MKII is slightly larger (4 to 6 liters), the padded hip wings now have large zippered pockets for quick-access items, and San Util added a dedicated zippered phone pocket on the backside of the pack. The back padding has been upgraded with a spine column for added stability, and the chunky external daisy chain has been slimmed down for a more refined look.

The Whirlpool MKII is made from a 420D laminated sailcloth fabric with a 70D backer and a 200D Oxford packcloth liner. It weighs 471 grams and costs $135 USD. The original US-made Whirlpool is still being sold, but is now called the Whirlpool Classic. The Whirlpool MKII is made in Vietnam and comes in three colors: Coyote, Black, and Plum.

The Whirlpool MKII is available now from SanUtilDesign.com.
