32-year-old German cyclist Sebastian Breuer (@seb_breuer) took the win early this morning at this year’s Badlands event in Spain. Despite hot temperatures and limited resupply, Sebastian finished the 780-kilometer route in just 43 hours and 40 minutes—more than two hours faster than last year’s first-place finisher, Mattia de Marchi. The event organizers let us know that this year’s route was a little less technical and the roads were in better condition, so the average speed of all participants appears to be a bit faster.

For the majority of the first day, Sebastian stuck right with the pointy end of the race, which included Justinas Leveika, Nils Correvon, and Benjamin Koch. Around the Tabernas Desert, he began to take a lead and was able to hold it solidly throughout the entire course, with the second-place position swapping between other riders. In the final leg of the event, Benjamin Koch closed the gap considerably, finishing just two hours after Sebastian in 45 hours, 19 minutes, followed by Nils Correvon at 47 hours, 53 minutes.

There are currently 11 riders who have finished the route, with lots more expected to finish in the next few hours. It’s the late afternoon in Spain right now, so there will be finishers rolling in to the village of Capileira all evening. Among those include Lael Wilcox, who has been working her way up the rankings and is currently positioned in 14th overall. She’s set up to be the first woman to finish the 2022 Badlands as well.
