What started with Shimano’s new 12-speed XTR has now trickled its way down into XT, SLX, and now Deore level components. While the groupset retains some of the core technologies like HYPERGLIDE+, the new Micro Spline Freehub, and Shimano’s DYNAMIC CHAIN ENGAGEMENT+, you can expect a more value-first approach and more affordable pricing. The new Shimano Deore 12-speed consists of new cranksets, chain, cassette, derailleur, shifter, dropper lever, brakes, and hubs—all part of the new M6100 series. Besides obtaining a Micro Spline compatible rear wheel, the complete Deore 12-Speed drivetrain could be yours for just $297.95 USD—which is right around the price of a single Shimano XTR 12-Speed rear derailleur. Find details on each of the components below, including photos, and a price breakdown at the end.
Shimano Deore 12-Speed FC-M6100 Cranksets
The new Deore 12-Speed Crankset is a standard two piece crank with either 30T or 32T direct mount chainrings. It’s available in two different crank arm lengths; 170mm and 175mm, and features new graphics that colour-shift in different light.
- Direct Mount Chainring
- Two Piece Crankset
- 1×12 Gearing Only
- Chainring Options: 30T and 32T
- Crank Arm Length: 170mm and 175mm
- Price: $94.99 USD
Shimano Deore 12-Speed CN-M6100 Chain
There’s not many details on the new M6100 series 12-speed chain, but it will likely share similar characteristics as the SLX-level M7100 chain but without the added durability offered by SIL-TEC treatment and $8.00 cheaper.
- Hyperglide+ Shift Technology
- Extended Inner Link Plate
- Quick Link Included
- Price: $23.99 USD
Shimano Deore 12-Speed CS-M6100-12 Cassette
The Deore 12-speed cassette is a full steel construction with what appears to be a 5 cog pinned spider and 7 additional cogs. Similar to the SLX cassette it has a cog combination of 10-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-33-39-45-51T. It’s unclear how the weight will compare to SLX, but it’s likely in the 550g range.
- 10-51T (510%) Gear Range
- Micro Spline Interface
- All Steel Cogs
- 1×12 Only
- Price: $91.99 USD
Shimano Deore 12-Speed RD-M6100-SGS Rear Derailleur
The Deore 12-speed rear derailleur is fairly impressive considering its ranking. It still features a Shadow RD+ clutch mechanism for increased chain retention and shifting accuracy and the rear pulley cage has the same new bumper as its more expensive siblings. It appears the overall build may not be as impressive at the SLX 12-speed derailleur, but it will be interesting to see how it performs on the trail.
- 13T Pulley
- 1×12 Only
- 51T Max Cog Size
- Shimano Shadow RD+ Technology
- Price: $54.99 USD
Shimano Deore 12-Speed Shift Levers
On paper the Deore 12-speed shift lever is quite similar to the higher-end SLX shifter. It offers Shimano’s Rapidfire Plus Shifting, two-way release, and is I-SPEC EV compatible for increased adjustment. It’s fair to assume that the Deore lever may require slightly more operation force than SLX and XT shifters.
- Rapidfire Plus Shifting
- Two-Way Release, Push and Pull
- Optical Gear Display Option
- SL-M6100-IR: I-SPEC EV
- SL-M6100-R: Band Clamp
- Price: $31.99 USD
Shimano Deore Brake Levers and Calipers
For the first time ever, Deore-level brakes see a 4-piston option for what could be a descent performing brake at a reasonable price point. Both the 4 and 2-piston callipers see a complete redesign, ICE-Tech brake pad compatibility, and inboard hose routing for a cleaner setup. A single new Deore lever (BL-M6100) is used for both calipers, which appears to have a wider, more durable clamp, a new lever axle position, and refined ergonomics.
- Shorter Free Stroke Lever
- Refined Ergonomics
- I-SPECEV compatible
- Inboard hose routing for clean setup
- BR-M6100: 2-piston brake caliper
- BR-M6120: 4-piston brake caliper
- Lever Price: $29.99 USD
- Caliper Price: $36.99/$64.99 USD
Shimano Deore 12-Speed Hubs
Rounding out the Shimano Deore 12-Speed system is a value-priced hub set, designed to offer simple setup and reliable performance. The radial cartridge bearings are a first for SHIMANO, offering 12-speed hub options in 142 and 148mm O.L.D. spec at a value level. Of course, the new hubs get Shimano’s Micro Spline freehub and a traditional ratchet and pawl system.
- Hassle-Free Setup
- Reliable performance
- O.L.D: 142 / 148mm
- Spoke Hole: 28H, 32H, 36H
- Axle Type: E-Thru
- Ratchet Type: Pawl
Shimano Deore 12-Speed Breakdown
- Deore 10-51T Cassette: $91.99
- Deore 12-Speed Chain: $23.99
- Deore 12-Speed Rear Derailleur: $54.99
- Deore 12-Speed Shifter: $31.99
- Deore 12-Speed Crankset: $94.99
- Total Cost: $297.95
As expected, the Deore 12-Speed drivetrain costs significantly less than both XT and SLX 12-speed groups, which retail for $622.93 and $409.93, respectively. The most interesting performance comparison will be between SLX and Deore, and we’ll make sure to report back as soon as we have a chance to test it out. Weight is the other unknown, which at this point hasn’t been provided by Shimano—but we’d expect a descent jump from SLX to Deore.
The entire Deore M6100 series components are available immediately from your local bike shop. Shimano’s Deore 11-Speed and 10-Speed drivetrains have also received some major updates, which you can read about here.
