The latest production bike from Sklar in California is inspired by Adam’s attempt to make the “perfect” touring bike, designed to go anywhere and everywhere with big tire clearance, a Chromoly steel frame and fork, loads of mounting points, and more. You can learn all about the Sklar PBJ (Performance Basket Jammer) here…
The Sklar PBJ (Performance Basket Jammer) is the California-based bicycle brand’s latest production bike model, and according to Sklar founder/owner Adam Sklar, it’s a refinement of what he has been building after over a decade of bicycle design and fabrication. The PBJ is the third production bike in Sklar’s lineup since moving to Taiwan-based production. It fits somewhere between the Super Something gravel bike we tested and the new Tall Tale hardtail mountain bike. As Sklar puts it, the Performance Basket Jammer “may look simple, but you can always count on it to get the job done.”
The Sklar PBJ is designed around a double-butted Chromoly steel frame and fork, sliding dropouts, boost hub spacing, post-mount disc brakes, and a 73mm BSA threaded bottom bracket. The frame has two bottle mounts in the main triangle (one standard, one three-pack), three-pack mounts under the downtube, and rack mounts. The matching fork has three-pack mounts on each leg, M5 bosses mid-blade and at the dropout, and a hole at the crown for a rack or fenders.
It’s designed for 29 x 2.6” tires but also plays nicely with 29 x 2.4″ tires and clears some 2.8″ rubber. It features a 31.6mm seatpost, internal dropper post routing, clearance for a 36T chainring, and full external cable routing. While the PBJ comes with a rigid fork, it’s suspension corrected for a 100mm short travel fork for those seeking a little extra cushion.
The Sklar PBJ’s geometry is inspired by modern mountain bike angles, with a slightly longer front center and a shorter stem but designed to remain playful and nimble. It comes in four sizes with a 69° head tube angle, 74° effective seat tube angle, 432mm chainstays, 68mm bottom bracket drop, and a wheelbase from 1,124mm to 1,222mm.
