Around the summer solstice each year, countless fireflies take over the local forests at dusk. Last month’s firefly gathering provided a spectacular light show. While the flat Freiburger Mooswälder are usually not my go-to riding destinations (I prefer tough Black Forest climbs), I recently really enjoyed cruising around with the dynamo lights turned off. The fireflies were everywhere, and it felt like being in a Ghibli movie. My vehicle of choice was my trusty Surly Krampus, the bike that can do it all. This snapshot merges 22 ten-second exposures into one picture. Unfortunately, the ratio of fireflies to mosquitos must have been close to 1:1, as they were on attack mode!
