I always thought about riding my bike from my hometown in the heart of Carinthia, Austria, to the small mountain village in western Carinthia where my girlfriend grew up. The direct route would have been a pleasant day trip—nothing too remarkable and definitely with far too many paved roads. So, I set out to find a route worthy of being called an exciting bikepacking adventure. Last weekend, unsure whether my planned route was even rideable, I took two extra days off and finally went for it. Four days on the Italian side of the Carnic Alps turned into a spectacular journey—stunning landscapes, tiny mountain cheese dairies, remote cabins, and endless gravel roads.
