A crew from Minneapolis and Des Moines joined on a section of the Minnesota River Ramble. Friday night, we camped at Flandreau State Park in New Ulm, where overnight temps reached 28, with gusts over 30 miles per hour. The next day, a 42-mile ride took us along the north side of the Minnesota River toward Mankato. We had the wind at our backs as we took in the scene. Many birding stops along the way to log 20+ species on eBird. We camped at Minneopa and woke up to thunder and snow. Quickly, the sun made its way, and we rode under sunny skies back to New Ulm with headwinds but lots of spirit. Along the way, the crew earned its trail name, the 12-Dotted-Dog. Riders (by trail name as gained during the trip): Tyvek, Catcher, Honey, Velveeta, and Avocado Avalanche.

Weekend Snapshot

I finally had the chance to take advantage of the mild spring weather for a quick bikepacking overnight trip. I scrambled to pack my things after a late night at work so I could ride my MTB a few kilometers out of the city. Arriving in the dark, I eventually found a set of old cherry trees (one of which was still in bloom) in an abandoned sheep pasture, which worked well enough to set up my hammock. After a short night, I was awakened by the terrifying howls of a fox, but I was then able to spend a peaceful morning reading while the world around me came to life.
