The 2021 Tuscany Trail was one of the biggest bikepacking events ever, with over 1,600 participants from all over the world. The route covered 500 kilometres of Tuscany’s strade bianche—starting from the town of Massa and crossing through some of the most iconic cities, including Siena, Monteriggioni, and Radicofani. Like every year, the organizers worked hard to create a safe and fun route across the region, and every single mile was designed with the idea of creating a unique experience for those riding it. Watch it below and scroll down for details on the 2022 event.
Because the event changes each year, the 2022 Tuscany Trail will start from the town of Castagneto Carducci, located about 80 kilometres south of Pisa. Castagneto Carducci offers 14 kilometres of unspoiled sandy beach, shady pine trees, cypress avenues, olive groves, and Bolgheri vineyards from which world-famous wines, like Sassicaia, are produced. The route will start from the beach, crossing Marina di Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri before heading north.
Around 66% of the trail will be on dirt roads, taking in some of Tuscany’s best low-traffic paved backroads. The total elevation gain is approximately 6,900 meters. The trail ends in Orbetello, which is characterized by a stunning lagoon. Learn more here.
