Apostle Islands Bikepacking on a Cargo Bike (Video)

Lehi Cano’s latest video follows his young family on a charming three-day journey around Wisconsin’s breathtaking Madeline Island in Lake Superior. Featuring some lovely music, great editing, and Lehi’s Omnium kid-hauler, it’s a feel-good video that has us excited for summer rides and is well worth the 15-minute watch…

It’s been granted since the day we found out we were expecting a little bambino that we would take them on as many bike trips as we could pull off. So, in September of last year, we set out for what would be the second bike camping trip, which was just a few nights longer than the last. We’re big fans of islands and biking on them, so the plan was to take a ferry to Madeline Island in Lake Superior for a three-day, two-night bikecamping trip at Big Bay State Park.

The route itself was super chill. The goal of our trips isn’t ever high mileage, and the pace is usually party. The overall mileage was about 25 miles. We started at Howl Adventure Center in Bayfield, Wisconsin, where they let us leave our car for the duration. It’s an awesome bike/gear/coffee shop with a brewery and bike trail surrounding the place, which I highly recommend if you’re in the area.

It was about a mile and a half to the ferry, then six miles to Big Bay State Park, where we would use our site as a basecamp to go out on rides and explore the island. Deciding how to load up the cargo bike and what to bring with the baby was part of the reason we went with a short, easy trip like this. We want to be better prepared when we go for longer distances.

The waters were deep, clear, and cold. The coasts were rocky, sandy, calm, and relaxing. The trees and wildlife were beautiful, and the sun shined almost the whole time. We’ll be back to the region as there’s a lot more to explore, and we’re looking forward to the next family bike trip! I hope you enjoy the 15-minute video above that captures our journey.
