In Tim Atwood’s latest video, he heads out to the Snowy Mountains in Australia for a solo overnighter before meeting up with friends who came in from Canberra. Watch the video and find a brief recap and some photos from Tim here…

Tim Atwood from the AdVANture ST YouTube channel loves to spend time in the Snowy Mountains just outside of Canberra, Australia, right before winter comes. He made some loose plans to meet some friends to take advantage of a public holiday and set off a day early for some much-needed solo bikepacking before meeting up with them late Sunday afternoon. Watch the 42-minute video Tim put together from the trip below and scroll down for some additional images and impressions.

Over the last few years, I’ve become obsessed with exploring the Kosciuszko National Park by bicycle. I’m on a bit of a personal mission to see as many of the Snowy Mountain huts as I can, and I’ve decided my favourite time of year to do this is just before winter.

I’ve now done at least one bikepacking trip during every season in Koscioszko and can comfortably say that either side of winter is the best for me. The cooler days make for excellent riding conditions, and with all the steep hill climbs, there is no problem keeping warm. On the other hand, the nights can be very cold, so that could be an issue for some. You definitely need to carry extra gear just to be safe.

In 2021 and 2022, I did a bikepacking trip down there, and both were amazing. All year, I’d planned to go back and do it again in 2023. After notifying some friends of my plans, they decided to jump on board. Only problem was they were from a different state and happened to have a public holiday on the Monday. With their responsibilities as parents, they would only head down Sunday morning. I decided to let them plan their own trip, and then I just added to it and went down a day early. The plan was to meet up Sunday afternoon.

Marty plotted their loop and did a great job. So good that I decided not to do my extra section of trail and instead just went slow and spent the time enjoying the scenery, playing with my cameras, and maybe did a little dancing. I ticked off three new huts on this trip, and I now know there are more in the area, so I’ll definitely be back. Maybe on the other side of winter!
