Route design has always been a hobby of ours. Years back, we worked in the fly fishing industry in Dutch John, Utah, and we’ve both been enthralled by the area ever since. After years of messing around with a Ride with GPS file, we finally had a route that we were happy with.
This route encapsulates the incredible countryside of northeast Utah and southwest Wyoming. This region is often overlooked because of its proximity to Utah’s national parks and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Why would you go to the barren wasteland of Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area instead? Well, there are a handful of reasons, but one of them is that it’s where the people aren’t. The other reason is the wild contrast in terrain and scenery.
“Building a route that we can be proud of that also has a strong tie to something that’s such a key moment in our lives…”
As shown in the video, the Cattle Calls and Canyon Walls route riders you through red rock canyons to open prairies grazed by wild horses and blanketed with Wyoming Sagebrush. It takes in the High Uintah wilderness among mountain pine trees, all while making a loop around the Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
This 16-minute video captures the process of finally riding the full route after countless hours of planning and re-planning it from afar. We’re excited to have shared a detailed guide to the Cattle Calls and Canyon Walls route here on BIKEPACKING.com today, and you can find it linked in the Further Reading grid just below.
