Leaving home for a few months means that in the last days of preparation, I’ll be nervously moving from one room to another, making lists and ensuring I don’t forget to pack anything. The clock was ticking against me as there was still plenty to prepare, but I also had a promise to myself to uphold. Earlier this year, I committed to going on a solo overnighter every season, and with the summer solstice approaching, it was time to fulfill that promise.
For each solo ride, I try to experiment with something new, changing the setup and pushing myself out of my comfort zone by identifying things that intimidate me. Previously, it was riding in the snow or cooking a meal outdoors. This time, as I planned to spend the night at the natural park of La Sierra de Irta in Spain, I wanted to be especially mindful of the natural area, so I thought it’d be a great opportunity to try bivouacking for the first time!
Well prepared, or so I thought, I cleared my schedule and set out on the bike, hoping this one-night adventure would help clear my head before our departure. Unfortunately, the evening didn’t go as I planned. The video above shares my story.
