Solo Spring Overnighter: In Search of Balance (Video)

In her ongoing mission to pedal out for a solo overnighter once a season this year, Belén Castelló headed into the hills above her home base in Spain for a spring getaway that afforded time to reflect on the need for balance. Find the video with an introduction from Belén here…

I often find myself caught between two extremes: spending excessive time either outdoors or indoors. Just as easily as I spend hours riding my bike, I can become completely immersed in screen time work for days on end, which isn’t exactly the healthiest habit.

This winter, Tristan and I based ourselves in Spain with the hope of finding a better balance between our active outdoor pursuits and static indoor commitments. The challenge, however, lies in our tendency to get lost in our laptops—there’s always work to do. And because it’s our first time stopping for a longer stretch after living on the move for years, we unconsciously end up grasping the comforts of the household, forgetting about the outside world surprisingly swiftly. After all, these comforts will all be gone soon as we head out for the next big adventure!

However, using exercise as the sole reason to go out doesn’t seem right to me. That’s why earlier this year, knowing I’d be dealing with longer periods indoors, I made a promise to myself: to go on a solo bike ride every season. And with spring in full swing in my region, it was the perfect motivation to go for another overnighter to help recover my adventurous spark.

In this video, I share my struggles to find balance in our lifestyle and how, by just spending 24 hours outdoors, I returned with a refreshed perspective. My aim with these overnighters is to continue building my comfort with venturing out on my own, but in this case, it also served as a good reminder to maintain my connection with the natural world.
