Jacob Waterman Closes in on Finish
by Miles Arbour33-year old Jacob Waterman is currently in first place for the full Arkansas High Country Race route, and is approaching the 800-mile mark. Jacob has participated in the last few events; last year he rode the Central Loop, in 2023 he rode the South Loop, and in 2022 he tackled the Ouachita Triple Crown.
He has well over a 100-mile lead on second place rider, Tanner Frady, who’s riding the loop in the opposite direction, but, as we know, anything can happen out there. Jacob posted a few Instagram stories yesterday of him icing his neck and knees. Hopefully he can keep pushing!

Matt Pike Scratches from AHCR
by Miles ArbourPhotos by Aaron Arnzen and Kai Caddy
After holding a strong lead on the full Arkansas High Country Race loop, Matt Pike has officially scratched from this year’s race. From the organizers: “His body and mind were worn down. This course has a way of humbling even the most prepared. We’ve got nothing but respect for Matt, he showed up ready to throw down, and that means something.”
Bryan Dougherty currently holds the lead, followed closely by Nick Elliott.

Justinas Leveika Scratches and Starts ITT
by Miles ArbourThe organizers reported yesterday that Justinas Leveika ran into a mechanical shortly after the grand depart, and he chose to scratch from the official race. Now, after getting his wheel fixed, he has turned his sights on an Individual Time Trial and is gunning for the fastest known time on the Arkansas High Country Route route. Some comments on their Instagram post show that not everyone is pleased with this tactic, calling out Justinas’ sportmanship.
