Half Frame Bags and Wedges for Bikepacking

Half frame bags and wedge-shaped frame bags are the perfect workarounds for those riding small frames and folks prefer to leave room for water bottles. Compared to full frame bags, they tend to offer a more universal fit, making it easier to find the right size and providing a more affordable optionn than a custom frame bag. We put together a list of over 30 half frame bags and wedge bags, complete with specs, photos, and some thoughts on those we've tested…

A full frame bag is the golden ticket for taking advantage of every last nook and cranny of your bike’s main triangle. When it comes to squeezing in gear and how the extra weight affects the handling of a bike, positioning that weight low and above the bottom bracket offers the best of both worlds. Although there are lots of great options out there, finding a full frame bag that fits your particular frame is often challenging, and buying a custom-made bag can be pricey and have long wait times—which is where the half frame bag comes in.

Half frame bags, wedge frame bags, or partial frame bags, whatever you want to call them, are typically designed to fill a portion of the main triangle, leaving space for a bottle or two in the process. Where space allows, a long, horizontal half frame bag will often permit the rider to mount a bottle on the downtube and seat tube, both of which are easily accessible while riding and keep the weight in a good position on the bike. For lightweight, warm-weather gravel trips, this is often one of the most efficient setups and one that we often employ when we can. Since these bags usually only work around the angles of the top tube and down tube, it’s easier to find a perfectly fitting non-custom half frame bag compared to a full frame bag.

Full or Half Frame Bag?

Choosing between a full or half frame bag ultimately comes down to personal preference, but there are some pros and cons of each. For starters, a proper fitting full frame bag makes the most of the space inside your main triangle, creating a fantastic spot to stow heavy, dense items that don’t pack nicely into saddle bags or handlebar setups. This will be particularly beneficial for those on large frames who have lots of real estate or for those with the budget for a custom frame bag to take advantage of every last inch of space.

  • Outer Shell Half Framebag

Half, partial, or wedge-shaped frame bags are inherently easier to fit, since they don’t usually interact with all of the frame’s tubes, which means readymade (non-custom) bags are a great option. Besides being cheaper, a half frame bag will normally leave room for one, or sometimes even two, bottle mounts, which can be essential for anyone hauling a lot of water. In some ways, half frame bags are more versatile than full frame bags, and are more appropriate for everyday use and commuting—especially if you’re not carrying lots of gear.

In the end, your main goal should be to take advantage of the space within your main triangle in a way that makes sense for you. We’ve had great success using custom-made full frame bags on longer trips, but we also appreciate the ability to mount a large Nalgene bottle on the seat tube next to a wedge-shaped bag, which is a great combination for general riding and multi-hour day rides.

Selecting a frame bag

There are numerous features to look out for when selecting a frame bag. Of course, we’re huge fans of supporting your local maker, which a look here or quick web search should help you find. You might be surprised by how many small brands are out there these days. Beyond that, a style and fit that makes sense for your needs (and frame) is perhaps the most important thing to look out for. Besides being more aesthetically pleasing, a proper fitting bag will make better use of what space you have, won’t bulge and rub against your knees, or prematurely wear out. Most manufacturers will provide some sort of size guide with measurements, based on the inside of your main triangle, which is often very helpful when determining what will and won’t fit. If you’re unsure, it’s safer to size down than get something too big.

Other features worth considering include waterproof construction, electronic/water bladder ports, multiple pockets, interior organization, and different attachment styles. Frame bags can be as simple or as complicated as you want, so take some time to figure out what will serve you best.

List of Half Frame Bags & Wedges

We’ve gathered a list of over 30 half frame bags and wedges, all available in standard, non-custom sizes and different shapes suited for nearly any bike out there. We’ve included key specs such as volume, fabric, and where the bag is manufactured, as well as the style of bag: half, wedge, or tiny wedge. It’s worth noting that many of these manufacturers also offer custom options, and we’ve tried to note that where applicable. As always, any bags we’ve tested ourselves are marked with a hexagonal T and include some additional thoughts in the text.

Neil’s Thoughts: This small, 2L multi-directional bag from apidura is pretty handy. I’ve found myself using it on my full suspension bike for extra cargo for my day rides and it has accompanied me on some century rides this winter. Because of the mounting orientation option, the bag comes with two tiny zippers on each side that access one main compartment. The bag has a variety of different mounts and mountain locations to help accommodate a proper fit. It’s not a huge bag, actually one of the smallest in the index, but that means it is well suited for smaller frames or full suspension bikes. The simplicity and versatility are highlights to this bag from Apidura.

Miles’ Thoughts: Although I’ve only been using the Fairweather Half Frame Bag for a short while, I can attest to its lightweight design and quality workmanship. It isn’t as big or as wide as the frame bags I normally use, but its slim design is both clean and great for smaller frames, and if the shape works well with your bike then it could make a great option for bikepacking and day rides.

California-based Outer Shell designed their Half Framebag to fit well on most frame sizes while still offering room for water bottles in the main triangle. The bag’s measurements only change a small amount between sizes and tapers slightly towards one end. The small bag has a 2″ taper in the rear, which is great for riders on small frames with sloping top tubes. The large centre strap is fixed, but the remaining three straps are removable thanks to some daisy chain webbing. Although the standard pricing is for a Cordura construction, you can get an X-Pac version for an additional $10.

Neil’s Thoughts: A proper fit has a lot to do with the bags overall functionality and the medium bags fits my 56cm Warbird very well. I used this bag on a number of bikepacking trips this past fall, giving me the ability to store plenty of gear while still maintaining two bottles within the frame. The simple, yet super durable bag comes with a large main compartment that is lined with a durable haplon fabric. Foam padding is sewn in around the circumference of the bag to help protect the bag’s contents and anything in the bag from rubbing up against the frame. The Cordura bag is coated with polyurethane which aids in water repelling and webbing daisy chains are installed to customize the fit to your bike. Finally, I really appreciate the stitching detail which is very professional and clean. The only thing I might change on the bag is adding an oversized molded tooth zipper for durability, but so far the drive and non-driveside zippers have had no issues.

Neil’s Thoughts: The Tangle was the original half-frame bag as we know them today. Because of that, it’s a very well designed and popular bag. The Tangle has seen a handful of improvements over the years which have made this bag a winner. The highlight is the #10 molded tooth zippers with their Zipstrech construction on both sides of the bag, which makes things much easier when opening and closing the bag, particularly when stuffed to the gills. This tech also helps reduce zipper fatigue. The bag comes with some neat low profile cam buckles, one wrap straps and daisy chain webbing throughout for a nice snug fit. Overall, the Tangle has everything you would need in a half-frame bag, it’s durable, sturdy and comes in a variety of sizes.

Road Runner Wedge Half Frame Bag

    • road runner wedge frame bag

Neil’s Thoughts: One of my go-to bags for days rides has been the Wedge Half Frame Bag. Oftentimes with half-frame bags, you run into clearance issues when fitting two bottles below the bag, The wedge aliveats that. This particular bag has seen a lot of use this winter, while the 2.5L bag might be a little small for my bikepacking needs, it’s great to have for my day rides where I store my tools, food, layers and phone. The one-size-fits-all cordura bag, fits nearly all of my bikes well, with a variety of daisy chains to provide the perfect fit. The large drive size zipper accesses a roomy upside down triangle like shape, which did take some practice in packing properly. The non-drive side has another large but shorter zipper that accesses the same size shape, but just in a slip pocket configuration. This pocket is great for small flat items like a wallet, phone, multi-tool and chain lube. Overall, the Road Runner Wedge has been a very noteworthy accessory to many of my winter rides.

Miles’ Thoughts: I’ve put a lot of time in with the Road Runner Wedge Mountain Bike Full Frame Bag, and it’s really turned me onto the idea of a high capacity wedge bag. It’s generously sized, which works well for larger frame sizes, and at 3″ wide it can hold a ton of stuff. On most large or XL mountain bike frames, it should leave enough room for a standard bottle or a Nalgene, which is great for day rides and bikepacking trips. It also has that classic Road Runner look that I appreciate, and the durable nylon frame protection flaps and crank panel are nice touches.

Neil’s Thoughts: This 5.5L bag is large, almost too big for my 56cm cutthroat, but it does fit nicely in my 56cm Warbird frame. Like most of these bags, it comes with two zippers and compartments, one large driver side compartment and a small slip pocket compartment on the non-drive side. The large compartment comes with a velcro divide to separate your belongings and to keep the bag from bulging too wide. The bag only comes with three connection points, one strap around the seat tube and two straps around the top tube which makes this bag a little less secure versus some other options in this index.

To compliment this Gear Index, in our latest video, Neil dives into the world of half frame bags and wedges. He talks about the benefits these bags offer, some packing ideas for day rides and bikepacking trips, and shares his thoughts on six different bags he’s tested over the years.

When to go custom & final thoughts

There are enough standard options available that going custom for a half frame bag doesn’t need to be your first choice. That said, certain frame geometries and sizes don’t always work well with stock options, and most non-custom bags won’t take advantage of any bosses your frame has for a clean bolt-on setup. Plus, there’s the benefit of being able to choose your own colours and features, which can be a fun process. There are countless talented bag makers who specialize in custom bags and we weren’t able to include in this list, but going fully custom is a great option if dialing in the perfect fit and matching the personality of your bike are important for you.

  • Rockgeist Wedge Frame Bag

Miles: I’m a huge fan of running a half frame bag on gravel bikes with nearly horizontal top tubes, where I’m able to fit two large bottles underneath it in the main triangle. With a setup like that, I can often leave my feedbags at home, keep the front of my bike lighter, and still access the bottles while on the move. I’ve also been experimenting with wedge-shaped bags recently on mountain bikes, which allow me to mount a large bottle or Nalgene on the seat tube—keeping the weight right above my bottom bracket, where it belongs. Pro tip for taller riders: try out a friend’s extra-small full frame bag as a wedge bag, it often works great!

Logan: I’m fortunate to have Rockgeist, a local bag maker, create custom solutions for many of the bikes I review. Even with options to choose from, most of the time I choose a simple wedge style partial frame bag for hardtails and gravel bikes. The main reason is that wedges allow me to get the best use out of the frame triangle for day rides. With a bottle mounted to the seat tube, it’s always accessible, and the wedge is perfect for storing layers and snacks. And with a custom-made wedge, it maximizes the triangle space, which is great for bikepacking, too.
