Our congratulations goes out to 30-year-old Alex Schultz from Marquette, Michigan, who clinched first place at this year’s Arizona Trail Race. Alex completed the full 800-mile route yesterday afternoon with a total time of 9 days, 5 hours, and 43 minutes (9d:5h:43m) and setting a new Fastest Known Time (FKT) in the process. Alex outpaced the previous record, set by Nate Ginzton in 2021, by a substantial five hours.

As we know, events like the AZTR usually don’t go as planned, even for the most prepared riders. We heard that Alex slept for 10 hours on Mt. Lemmon, just north of Tucson, battling cramps. Still, he managed to stay up front with Katya Rakhmatulina and Philippe Vullioud the entire way. Later in the race, he only took an hour-long nap on the north rim of the Grand Canyon after the massive thru-hike. Alex is no stranger to the route, having won the 300-mile AZT300 race last year after battling dehydration and hallucinations at one point. Congrats, Alex!
As of publishing, Katya Rakhmatulina also finished the 800-mile route and set new records at the event. Stay tuned for more on that once we get photos from the finish line.
