This year’s Highland Trail 550 event in Scotland saw a stacked playing field, including familiar names such as Andrew and Katie Strempke, James Hayden, Kurt Refsnider, Josh Ibbett, Annie Le, and Sofiane Sehili. We knew it was going to be an exciting one to follow along, and the riders delivered.
For the majority of the 550-mile route, Agnus Young, Alex Mccormack, and Manu Cattrysse rode up front together. After eight punctures and two tires, Alex pulled out from the race, leaving Angus and Manu to battle it out to the finish. Right up until the end, the two were within just a couple of miles of each other, but Angus pulled ahead within the route’s last miles and ended up finishing first.
Angus’ unofficial finish time is 3 days, 7 hours, and 25 minutes. He averaged 7.6 miles per hour and 167.4 miles per day, which is quite impressive considering the challenging terrain the route is known for. He was riding a Mason RAW hardtail set up with 29 × 2.6″ Vittoria Mezcals, a Shimano XT 12-speed drivetrain, and a full set of Straight Cut Designs bags. There are still lots of riders out on the course, and you can head over to the event page to follow along live. Since the route has changed year to year, it’s hard to compare times, but Angus’ time is the fastest we’ve seen—a full 4 hours faster than Huw Oliver’s 2022 finish.
