The list of ready-to-order dynamo wheels has grown thanks to DT Swiss and its new gravel dynamo wheel lineup. Learn more about the Shutter Precision-equipped DT Swiss GR 1600 Spline Dynamo wheels, G 1800 Spline Dynamo wheels, and the DT Swiss 350 SP PL-7 dynamo hub here…

Many bikepackers, commuters, and all-weather riders have found lighting bliss thanks to dynamo hubs. These nifty hubs convert mechanical energy to electrical energy by harnessing the rotation of your front wheel, providing useable power for front/rear lights and keeping your gadgets charged while on the go. One drawback is that few readymade production dynamo wheels and wheelsets are available, and up until recently, purchasing a custom-built wheelset was the most common way to get one. However, thanks to brands like Hunt, Velocity, Sonder, Curve, and now DT Swiss, a growing number of dynamo-equipped wheels are available off the shelf for consumer convenience.

DT Swiss Dynamo

Before today, DT Swiss hadn’t offered a complete dynamo wheel, but considering the Switzerland-based wheel giant has a reputation for designing and manufacturing some of the highest-quality wheels in the game, it’s exciting to see a readily available DT Swiss dynamo wheel option. At the core of the launch is the DT 350 SP PL-7 hub, which is the Shutter Precision PL-7 dynamo internals paired with DT Swiss bearings and a custom hub shell. Alongside the hub are two dynamo wheels: the GR 1600 Spline DYN and G 1800 Spline DYN, both designed around the same dynamo hub but slightly different rim specs and price points. The hub is available to purchase on its own, and the wheels are available as a front-only or as a complete wheelset.

Neil has been using the wheels on his Otso Warakin over the last few weeks, and he’s been impressed. The hub feels very efficient, and based on DT Swiss’s testing, the resistance is on the low end. However, one current limitation of this setup is its availability: the hub only comes in 12 x 100mm spacing with 24-hole configurations. This makes it more suited to road and gravel riders than the off-road segment.

Hopefully, this is just the beginning as we’d love to see a boost-spaced, 32-hole hub paired with a wider rim. Bikepackers will appreciate the hub’s straight-pull spoke design, which simplifies spoke replacement. It seems DT Swiss has taken SP’s technology and combined it with their expertise in crafting attractive hub shells and more reliable bearings. So far, it’s been promising, and we’ll continue to test to see how they fare over the long term.
