The Dead Sailor from Fluent Frameworks in Nova Scotia, Canada, was originally made for the 2020 North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS), but the show was canceled, so the show bike was never properly displayed. We recently spotted it on Instagram and wanted to give it the beautiful 29+ rigid single-speed mountain bike the recognition it deserves.

Backed by a decade of design, the Fluent Frameworks Dead Sailor is constructed from a mix of Reynolds 853 tubing and sports a 66-degree headtube, a 76-degree seat tube, a 684mm effective top tube, 430mm chainstays, and a full-forward 830mm front center, the combination of which builder Matt Manuel says is ideally suited for the rough, rooty trails and constant ups and downs of riding on Canada’s East Coast.

We love 29+ here at BIKEPACKING.com, but the size has regretfully fallen out of favor since its heyday. In Matt’s words, “The concept of this bike feels at odds with the larger bike industry as a whole. The tires currently on the bike have already been discontinued as ‘big bike’ is starting to kill off 29+ in favour of the new sacred 32-inch. If I have to keep hearing about better ‘contact patch’ on a 32, I might smash my head against a brick wall.”

Beyond the design and build, Matt also did the paintwork. The Dead Sailor features a sinking coffin on the head tube, seaweed on the bottom of the bike, and layered green seawater that lightens toward the top/surface. Swimming dead fish cover the bike, and a hand reaches up from the depths if you look closely enough. The many details make for a stunning frameset worth pausing to absorb. For good measure, Matt also made matching stickers and a couple of tees.

The build features an MRP Rock Solid rigid carbon fork; Paul Love Lovers mated to Klamper brakes; White Industries hubs, headset, bottom bracket, and cranks; a Boone Technologies 18/20 dingle ring; sanded and polished Sun Ringle Duroc 50 rims; Teravail Coronado 29 x 2.8” tires; a Wolf Tooth Resolve dropper post; and an Industine Nine A31 stem.
