News from around the bikepacking world…
El Piri 2025 Startline Bursary
El Piri is an 800-kilometer gravel adventure through the Catalan Pyrenees, starting and finishing in the city of Girona. To help increase diversity at the event, the organizers teamed up with Tailfin to offer a startline bursary for under-represented groups in bikepacking who would otherwise not be able to afford to come to their events. Applications for the 2025 bursary close on Friday, January 31st, at midnight CET. Apply here.
Southern Alps Crossing: Weekend Mission With Rufus
Joe Nation’s latest video documents his attempt to find an alternative route to cross the Southern Alps with Rufus Wenlock’s. The pair end up getting far more than they bargained for. “The total planned route turned out to be overly ambitious, but nevertheless, it was an epic weekend and a new piece of New Zealand unlocked for us!”
Should Dyed in the Wool Sell MYOG Materials?
Since launching Dyed in the Wool over five years ago, the team has been on the hunt for the best and most local suppliers of fabric and other materials used for their bags. Now, they’re wondering if the DIYers and amateur bag makers would be interested in a community shop for webbing, labels, technical fabrics, and more. They put together a short survey where you can share your thoughts! Complete it here.
Events Starting Soon
What to watch this weekend and bikepacking events starting soon…
The Great Southern Brevet
The Great Southern Brevet is a 1,100-kilometer bikepacking adventure around the Central South Island of New Zealand. Depending on your pace, it is one of the tougher bikepacking rides, so the reward is huge. This year’s grand depart takes off from Lake Tekapo this morning with nearly 200 riders registered for live tracking. Follow along live here.
Arrowhead 135
The Arrowhead 135 is a winter ultra for hikers, skiers, and bikers in Northern Minnesota with an average finish rate under 50%. There are more than 150 participants signed up for this year’s grand depart, which starts on Monday morning from International Falls. Follow their progress live here.
Wish We Were Here
Shedding a little light on a route one of us is dreaming about riding at the moment…
Logan: Away from Cell Data
As reported in the Weekend Snapshot earlier this week, Virginia and I spent the weekend high up in the Sierra Norte in Oaxaca riding the community-built trails in Ixtepeji. The riding was great, but I also love the fact that there is no wifi or cell data service up there thanks to our relatively poor T-mobile coverage. It’s getting harder and harder to find “dark” places like that, so I always relish the occasion to escape connectivity and the news cycle. P.S. We’re back in Oaxaca de Juárez now, so if you’re passing through riding one of our many routes here and want to catch up for a coffee or ride, please reach out!
