On his third attempt to secure a victory, 34-year-old Justinas Leveika of Lithuania officially took first place at the 2024 Atlas Mountain Race in Morocco. If you’ve been following along via our Tracker, you’ll know year’s event was full of surprises. From a 24-hour delayed start due to rain to harsh wind and blisteringly hot daytime temperatures, it was anyone’s race to win. We can imagine this is a particularly exciting win for Justinas after scratching in 2022 and placing second last year.
Of course, his win didn’t come easy. For the majority of the race, Justinas was riding neck and neck with Drikus Coetzee until Drikus was forced to scratch from the race due to a combination of dehydration and a crash from the previous night. We’re told Drikus is okay and is being checked over in Essaouira on the Atlantic Coast. Justinas’ official winning time is 3 days, 19 hours, and 27 minutes.
Not far behind was Ulrich Bartholmoes, who finished in second place, although we don’t have an official finish time for him yet. Ulrich has had a busy last few years, racking up many wins along the way, including the 2024 Race Around Rwanda, 2023 Tour Divide, 2023 L’Esperit de Girona, and 2022 Across Andes. There are still tons of riders out on route, including Cynthia Carson, who is currently leading the women’s group.
