Presented by FLA Cycling, Into The Lowlands is a new 25-minute documentary exploring Florida’s long-distance cycling and bikepacking culture. Find the full film with some words from Robert Schaefer and a selection of photos from the project here…
Robert Schaefer’s latest video documents his experience riding Karlos Bernart’s Highland to Lowland Loop in Central Florida. From the preparation and training to the execution and challenges faced on the road, this documentary covers every aspect of Robert’s ultra-cycling experience. Although his plan to complete the 216-mile loop in 14 hours didn’t go as planned, Robert says he’s looking forward to getting out there again soon. Watch the video here:

The Highland to Lowland Loop by Singletrack Samurai spans 216 miles of diverse terrain, encompassing paved roads, gravel paths, and a challenging off-road section covering approximately five miles. My primary objective was to set a record by completing the entire loop in a single ride.
Setting off at 5 am, my aim was to return to the Green Swamp before sunset. However, what I initially anticipated to be a 14-hour endeavor stretched into more than 19 hours. Embarking from the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve West Tract, I traversed eastward towards the Van Fleet State Trail. The loop reached its northern apex at Crystal River, then followed a southward route along US 19, leading through roughly 25 miles of the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area.
After passing Weekiwachee Gardens, the route veered eastward again, culminating the loop with an undulating stretch around Dade City. Notably, the bulk of the 3,000 feet of elevation gain occurred in the final 50 miles. On the surface, the route seemed manageable but lengthy. However, the entire experience served as a stark reminder of the humbling nature of these long rides. Initially, I expected to pedal at a quicker pace than my previous adventure on the Spanish 520 course a few months prior. But it was slow going. Despite the flatter, less technical terrain with no singletrack and more pavement, I encountered numerous mechanical issues around mile 40, particularly during the challenging “gnarly” section.
Fatigued, I made terrible decisions in addressing the multiple flat tires encountered throughout the day. While I anticipate others will soon undertake the challenge and surpass my established time, I believe that with improved planning and experience, achieving the sunset goal is possible. Perhaps, in the future, I may take another shot at it.
