The new Durston X-Dome 2 weighs under three pounds, offers plenty of space for two people and gear, is freestanding, and is available with ultra-short bikepacking poles to make carrying it even easier. Dig into the details here…

Last fall, Durston branched away from its non-freestanding X-Mid tent series with their first freestanding tent, the X-Dome 1. Like the X-Mid series, the X-Dome 1 uses an X-Mid floorplan, with a convenient diagonal floor inside a rectangular fly, which Durston says maximizes floor space, helps keep weight down, and creates a stronger overall tent. We knew a two-person version was on the way, and we’re excited to announce that the day has come.

The new Durston X-Dome 2 is an ultralight freestanding tent that, according to Durston, is designed to be more “spacious, protective, and simple to use.” It’s made from 100% polyester fabric (it doesn’t soak up water, so the tent is non-sag and dries quickly), can be pitched fly-first in rainy conditions or inner-only for the ultimate stargazing experience, and weighs in at just 2.7 pounds (1.25 kilograms). It appears to be quite spacious inside compared to other lightweight two-person tents, with a 52″ (130cm) width for the full length, so it can easily accommodate two wide pads. It’s 88″ (224cm) long, which looks ideal for tall users, and near-vertical end walls mean you can take advantage of all the interior space. It has a generous 43″ (110cm) interior peak height, which Durston says is 3-6″ taller than comparable two-person tents.

The X-Dome 2 has two zippered doorways and 9-square-foot (0.83-square-meter) vestibules, magnetic door toggles, roof vents at each end, two small interior pockets with a large raised pocket at one end, and several interior hang loops to dry gear out. It uses a double-Y-shaped pole structure with a horizontal cross beam pole to create more space above each doorway. Easton carbon poles are specced to add strength and reduce weight, and they’re even using larger diameter tubing in high-stress areas to improve durability and strength.

The X-Dome 2 is available with a mesh interior (regular version) for when ventilation and breathability are crucial or a solid inner version for added warmth and protection from the elements. There’s also the choice of regular length (18″/46cm) poles or shorter bikepacking poles (13″/33cm), which is great to see for riders who have trouble packing long pole segments. Like the rest of Durston’s tents, the X-Dome series is made in Vietnam at the same factory that makes tents for other well-known brands.
