Never having ridden more than 40 kilometers in a day and with an untested new bike, Paul de Tilly left his home in Paris and began pedaling 12,000 kilometers across Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia last year. He captured the stunning scenes and cross-cultural interactions he experienced along the way. Watch his 30-minute video here…

Paul de Tilly’s first bike trip was an ambitious one. It was the kind of undertaking that most cyclists would spend years planning and preparing for, but in early 2022, he loaded up his brand new Cube gravel bike, took it on a quick spin around the neighborhood, and then headed off on a four-month bikepacking journey that would take him across 18 countries.

He experienced the Alps in winter, Iran during Ramadan, and the second-highest road in the world, to name just a few highlights. Paul rode without much of a plan and was turned away at multiple borders, but he took every setback in stride and maintained a positive attitude and a sincere openness toward everyone he met.
