For the eighth year in a row, Paul Components has put together a bike at the request of Sierra Nevada Brewing company specifically for Sea Otter. With the goal of raising money for a non-profit via auction, the bikes Paul Components assembles tend to focus on American-made parts that emphasize the unique builders who offer a hand. This year’s build is particularly special, as it pays homage to the Dixie Fire, a blaze that burned a million acres in the northern Sierra in 2021.
The frame is handcrafted by Cameron Falconer, who is based in Quincy, California, where the fire took place. FOX donated their new fork and dropper post, and SRAM outfitted the Sierra Trailblazer with the recently released cable actuated Transmission drivetrain, making this the ultimate Lost Sierra hardtail.
The paint job represents the effect the fire had on the landscape, but no Sierra Nevada auction bike would be complete without the signature green anodized components. Together, they symbolize fire and new growth. The build features brakes, levers, a stem, and seatpost collar by Paul Components, drivetrain bits by White Industries, rims by Velocity, custom anodized titanium handlebars by BTCHN’ Bikes, touch points by WTB, and CNC cable cherries from Forager Cycles.
It all comes together in a unique build that supports a great cause, with fire crews using the same trails this fund benefits to help put out the blaze back in 2021. After their experience using the trails on Mount Hough as access points to fight the fire, the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship reexamined the role recreational trails can play in forest management and economic recovery. Fire Hardened Trails is a new trailbuilding project that aims to reduce ground and ladder fuels, create healthier forests, and protect local communities.
