Suffolk, UK

This weekend was meant to be an attempt at the Wolf Way route in Suffolk, but a storm forecast for Saturday night and a desire to get home and build a fence in the garden meant I cut the trip short to a single overnighter around the Suffolk coast. It’s an area I know well, having grown up there, and riding through the peaceful countryside as an adult, I realise how fortunate I was as a child to have such ready access to this wonderful outdoor space. A late finish and early start rewarded me with tranquil forest tracks, an empty quayside breakfast, peaceful heathland trails, and riding through two perfect golden hours.

I experienced one of the best moments yet as a father when I took my eight-year-old son on his first bikepacking trip. We ventured into the San Rafael Swell, climbing just over 2,000 feet in 16 miles round-trip. There was some complaining at times, but I constantly handed out squares of chocolate as we ascended. The wind on the first night deposited a fresh layer of dust in our tent with each gust. Day two called for even higher winds and an ever-increasing chance of rain. We decided to bail to Moab, where the promise of Milt’s fueled him on the climb out. The trip ended with a second “first,” an eight-year-old discovering the Slickrock Trail. We’re already planning the next adventure.
Idaho, USA

Over a recent weekend, six friends—Lucas, Casey, Tyler, Dillion, Paul, and Jake—and I grabbed coffee at Push and Pour in Garden City, then threw a leg over the saddle for an overnighter. We took on the Around Arrowrock loop: 114 miles and just over 8,000 feet of elevation. The route had a little bit of everything: greenbelt cruising, singletrack, wide-open gravel roads, punchy climbs, and some fast, steep descents.
It was an absolute epic. Big miles, incredible views, and the kind of ride that leaves you smiling and completely cooked at the same time. The timing couldn’t have been better. I had gotten my new Sklar PBJ built up by Ryan at Bike Touring News, just in time for the trip. I was beyond excited to finally put it through its paces, and it absolutely delivered. The bike felt right at home the whole way around. Definitely one for the memory bank.
