Victoria, Australia
By Victoria Veldhuizen
I’m currently in training for the FLINTA*850 later this year, which means heading out regularly in less-than-ideal weather, into as many hills as I can find. On a recent weekend, I did the Billy Bunyip overnighter, a spectacular route with some challenges faced in rain and rutted 4WD tracks! This shot was taken when the hike-a-bike finally ended, and the clouds finally parted, finding myself in beautiful Australian forest on pristine gravel roads.
Cumberland, Wisconsin
By Josh Rizzo
Before the busy summer, I needed a night by myself with a bike and some new trails. Timberland Hills is a new MTB trail system in an old cross-country ski forest in Northern Wisconsin. They’ve got 20+ miles of rolling hills, quiet lakes, and machine-built trails along with five bike-in campsites and a trailside rustic cabin. I rolled up to my cabin and unpacked, then set my timer for 8:42 p.m. (sunset) and never stopped turning the pedals until the forest began darkening. Settling in for the night, I made cold tortilla pizzas then went to bed with an early alarm to ride the trail system again in the morning before heading back home for the work week.
Kent, UK
By Matt Bark
It seems rare that a bank holiday weekend aligns with some truly warm weather here in the UK, but this year it gave the perfect (if not a little too warm) opportunity to get out and try another of Cycling UK’s bikepacking routes. The Cantii way is a 145-mile (234-kilometer) route that explores coastal towns, chalk cliffs, and the Kent downs on a mixture of quiet lanes, cycle paths, and light gravel tracks. I took three days to enjoy the scenery, stop in the towns, and enjoy some views in the sun along the way.
