Kernville, California, USA

With a heatwave set to blast coastal SoCal, I plotted an escape to the cooler environs of Sequoia National Forest in the southern Sierra Nevada. I had four days to ride a “best-of” 120-mile route through the Kern Plateau’s huge network of moto trails and forest roads, running the gamut from relaxing forest riding to punishing hike-a-bike. The route climbed passes and ran through meadows and streams, past big trees and bigger views. Fortunately, ideal weather let me do cowboy camp, since I forgot my rear rack at home and had no room to pack a shelter.
Vermont, USA

Spent a few cold days out with the waning autumn foliage on a route I didn’t fully scout beforehand. That meant longer saddle time, reroutes, and sketchy camping. A good reminder that even if it looks nice on a map, it might not be when you get there. Regardless, I was treated to freshly graded gravel roads with nearly no vehicle traffic, clear night skies, warm rural smiles, and the joy of exploring a new area.
Muskoka, Ontario, Canada

With August offering some of the best summer conditions in Central Ontario, I returned a couple of months back to re-experience my good ol’ Ridout Bigwind Rugged Ramble route—this time with a new purpose. I wanted to see whether a fun route update could bypass a notoriously muddy section that has worsened since the route was first published. The result was a trade-off: the potential new section was less muddy, but noticeably more rugged and technical. Nonetheless, it made for an amazing solo adventure, with countless beautiful vistas, lush green forests, and memorable encounters with the people who call the area home.
