On Sunday, September 4th, Martijn, Finley, and Jelmer of the Ride Beyond Crew started Badlands 2022 in Granada. The route is about 780 kilometers long and crosses some of Europe’s most remote and challenging places: the Gorafe Desert, Tabernas Desert, Cabo de Gata Natural Park, and Veleta Pass at 3,212 meters. There were nearly 200 solo riders and 40 pairs registered at this year’s event.

Mike Vlietstra, who previously held a Badlands photo exhibit in Ride Out Amsterdam, followed and captured Martijn, Finley, and Jelmer during their ride and created a 90-minute film about their experience that showcases all of the struggles, heat, emotions, and beautiful scenery along the way. Watch it below and then scroll down to watch an additional video they put together highlighting their race rigs.

“I’m really starting to question what we’re doing here. [They] just have to make everything fun into a race… and then spoil it.”

Badlands edition Focus Atlas Bike-check

The three rode “Badlands Edition” Focus Atlas bikes that were custom-designed to suit the race. In this video made prior to the one above, they head out to traverse a section of the Tabernas Desert course as a final bike check.
