New Zealand, South Island
By Liz Ryen
Some places are just too beautiful to pedal past. Even though there was plenty of day left, I spent the afternoon resting my tired legs and enjoying a beach that I only found because it was off the side of an obscure bike trail I took on a whim.
Pisgah Forest, North Carolina

This weekend, I set off on a single-day adventure. Initially set on tackling a hefty 10,000 feet of climbing, I settled for a paltry 8,541 feet after remembering I had an engagement in the late afternoon. My travels took me from Bent Creek all the way over to near Logan’s neck of the woods in Brevard with a few steep climbs in between.
Texas

This weekend, my friend Chieh, a retried marine technician, embarked on a journey from Texas around the globe. Chieh spent 30+ years sailing the oceans on a research vessel and now wants to explore the planet’s drier places. Two other friends and I joined her for the first 150ish miles from College Station to Austin. Camping in Lake Somerville State Park, a super-cell that would later drop baseball-sized hail on College Station just missed us and only dumped torrential rain on us for 20 minutes. No match for our tents, fortunately. From Somerville, we went through some wildfire smoke to Buescher and Bastrop State Parks, fueled up with Texan BBQ and tacos, and eventually parted ways in Austin. You can follow Chieh’s ride here.
