It already feels like it’s been a long winter here in the Northern Hemisphere, so we’re offering a little respite from reminders of the cold and sharing a few greener scenes in this installment of Weekend Snapshot. This Sunday, I rode my bike into Brandenburg to check out future camp spots for quick escapes out of town. A few days of rain had soaked the forest roads and made for some fun in the mud.

At least once a year, I sleep in or next to this beautiful chapel in a rather remote region (by Austrian standards) in the Voralpenraum. After my first night, the “Mesnerin” – a woman who basically supports the Catholic pastor – found me in the morning snorring at the altar and after stammering an excuse she just smiled and said, “Den Herrgott wird’s doch nicht stören!” This translates to something like, “Surely the Lord God won’t mind!”

On this trip, we went to the foothills, a place very far from the city at 1,800 meters above sea level. We took water from the Chalaco stream, which brings water from the mountains en route to a reservoir. The vegetation is very unruly, with thorny bushes and many cacti, but in the valley and ravines between the stony hills, there is an incredible mix of vegetation. There are succulents and thorny bushes, and a formation of forests that give shade in a great part of the path next to the creek. Without a doubt, it was an excellent weekend that we will repeat with a larger group.
