A wildfire broke out near the mountain biking center of Ixtepeji in Oaxaca this past Sunday, destroying businesses, houses, and properties in the area. Erwin Gazga, a local rider, made a video that shows the disaster that ensued. Watch it here and learn how you can support the relief efforts…

If you’ve ridden any of our routes in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, you know how special the area is and how important these trails are. As it happens, a couple of us were up there riding singletrack this past weekend and left just before a massive wildfire broke out. We were lucky, but many local residents were not, and property losses were significant. Fortunately, the community-maintained trails and the Ecoturismo center wasn’t affected, but many people in the area were. Consider supporting the relief efforts by making a donation at the community account that Erwin Gazga, a local rider, featured on Instagram (see post embedded below, or click through here). Here’s a rough translation of the video captions:

Cyclist friends and non-cyclists: Unfortunately, the area of land belonging to Santa Catarina Ixtepeji was affected by a big fire this weekend, damaging not only the forests but also the automobiles, houses, and restaurants of the people who live in this community.

Riding friends, those who have come to cycle and enjoy the forests and trails of Ixtepeji, or those who are just thinking of visiting, you can help by supporting and donating for the recuperation of the area and the people of the community, thus ensuring that Ixtepeji can continue to be mountain biking paradise for you and many others. You can bring water, groceries, and supplies to make meals as well as flashlights or tools to the local collection center.

You can also support financially by donating what you can to the following account number. All support helps. Please help us share and spread this video to those in the cycling community and beyond, so others can contribute their part for the restoration of Santa Catarina Ixtepeji.
