On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America. What better way to experience it than on a bike? Here’s a list of bikepacking routes that will be in the path of totality, arranged by time…

In case you missed the total solar eclipse back in 2017, you’ll have another chance in April of this year. On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will traverse North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The path of totality will begin over land on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 8:07 a.m. EST, and weather permitting, there will be some great places to experience it through the central United States and the northeast. And, in our opinion, there’s no better way to experience it than on a bike. Here’s a list of bikepacking routes we’ve compiled that intersect the path of totality, complete with the approximate time of total eclipse according to NASA’s map.

  • Eastern Divide Trail Segment 3, Lupine
  • Eastern Divide Trail Segment 4 Trillium
  • Texas Hill Country Overnighter
  • VTXL Bikepacking Route
  • Green Mountain Gravel Growler Bikepacking Route, Vermont

Note that routes in italics are barely outside the path of totality, but will likely experience a near total eclipse.

If you have an overnighter bikepacking route that is in the path, and you’d like to publish it on our Local Overnighter Project map, please get in touch. We’re always looking for great overnighters developed by locals to help get more people out bikepacking. Submit here.
